#Bob Dylan is the world’s most renowned and iconic #singer-songwriter. His music encompasses #folk, #folk rock, #country,# rock and roll and #gospel. He is the winner of the #Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016

Dig Yourself is the third volume of Chris Gregory’s BOB DYLAN: PICASSO OF SONG, a ‘trilogy in reverse’ which covers the great singer-songwriter’s entire output, tracing the origins of his songs and examining how Dylan created his unique amalgam of musical and literary influences. Following on from the acclaimed Determined to Stand: The Reinvention of Bob Dylan and Minstrel Boy: The Metamorphoses of Bob Dylan, Dig Yourself traces the amazing evolution of Dylan’s unique art during his febrile and immensely creative early years - a poet ‘drunk on words’, determinedly following his own creative path, despite the immense controversies that sometimes followed his rapid changes of style. All the songs of the 1961-66 period are examined in great depth, as Chris focuses on how he created a unique form of ‘sound poetry’, whose power and influence still resonates today.

The book also follows the development of Dylan as a live performer by focusing on many examples of his live performances, from his early days as a solo performer in Greenwich Village to his iconoclastic mid 60s tours with The Band, culminating in the famous ‘Judas moment’ at Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966.

Part One, Keys to the Highway, examines Dylan’s musical, poetic and personal influences.
Part Two, The Ship Comes In, looks at the early ‘protest songs’ that made his name.
Part Three, Younger Than Yesterday, investigates his move into more introspective and visionary material.
Part Four, A Headful of Ideas, analyses the key texts in his switch from ‘folk’ to ‘electric’ music.
Part Five, The Circus is in Town covers the satirical, enigmatic and transcendent songs of the latter part of this period. I have also placed considerable focus on his ever-evolving live shows, as well as a number of interviews, which he transformed - in his own unique way - into endlessly quotable comic extravaganzas.

Chris Gregory has this rare gift. He can write seriously about music, yet his prose flows effortlessly. You know how academics can get tedious and fans can get carried away? Gregory finds the sweet spot in the middle - he tells the story in a way that’s engaging and informative at the same time.
