Kris Kristofferson Never Heard Janis Joplin Sing His Song—Until the Day After She Died

Kris Kristofferson was a struggling songwriter when he wrote a song that would eventually become one of rock music’s most unforgettable classics. That song was Me and Bobby McGee—but its greatest success came through Janis Joplin’s powerful voice.
Janis and Kris became friends in 1970 after being introduced through musician Bobby Neuwirth. They spent time together, and Kris even stayed at Janis’s house for about a month. Their connection was built around music, friendship, and the unpredictable world they lived in.
Then came the heartbreaking twist. Janis recorded her version of Me and Bobby McGee, transforming Kris’s song into an emotional anthem about freedom, love, and loss. But Kris never got to hear her finished recording while she was alive.
Janis died on October 4, 1970, at just 27 years old. The following day, Kris finally heard the recording. In a later interview, he recalled that he walked around Los Angeles in tears after listening to it.
In 1971, Janis’s version was released posthumously and climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became her signature hit—and a lasting reminder of a gifted singer whose greatest musical success came after her life ended.
