Playing "This Time" by Waylon Jennings on bass in Rocksmith+.

Recorded July 11, 2026.

"This Time" is the title track from Waylon Jennings’ 1974 album This Time. Jennings wrote the song himself, and the recording was produced by Waylon alongside Willie Nelson during the period when he was gaining much more control over how his records sounded.

Duke Goff played bass on the recording, with Richie Albright on drums, Ralph Mooney on steel guitar, Don Brooks on harmonica, and Waylon on vocals and guitar.

Lyrically, "This Time" is a relationship song with a line finally being drawn. The narrator has been through the same cycle before, but now he’s making it clear that things have to change. It’s simple, direct country storytelling with the kind of restrained groove that became a big part of Waylon’s outlaw-country sound.

Released as a single in April 1974, "This Time" reached No. 1 on Billboard’s country chart. It was Waylon Jennings’ first solo No. 1 country single and the beginning of a remarkable run of chart-topping records.
