For 122 years, the world's most militarised society has shifted dramatically. Ethiopia held the top spot in 1900 with 1.91%. France took over during World War One. Switzerland led during World War Two — a neutral country that called up its whole militia. Then came the Cold War pivots: Taiwan dominated the 1950s–60s as it faced the mainland. Israel passed Taiwan in 1971 and held the lead for over a decade. Iraq's eight-year war with Iran pushed it to number one in 1984. North Korea ruled from 1991 to 2016. Then in 2017, Eritrea — a nation of just 6 million on the Horn of Africa — passed every other country, with a rate that has kept climbing since.

Key shifts across the timeline:
• 1915: France passes Ethiopia during World War One
• 1940: Switzerland leads as Europe burns
• 1971: Israel passes Taiwan
• 1984: Iraq surges during the Iran–Iraq War
• 1991: North Korea enters the modern era as number one
• 2017: Eritrea becomes the world's most militarised state
