Today we’re listening to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson perform “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” one of the defining songs of the outlaw-country era.
Written by Ed and Patsy Bruce, the song became a major hit for Waylon and Willie in 1978. Beneath its memorable title and easygoing country sound is a wonderfully complicated portrait of the cowboy: independent, restless, difficult to understand, drawn to freedom—and perhaps not exactly the person a mother would choose for her child to become.

As two classical musicians, we were especially interested in the contrast between Waylon Jennings’ darker, grounded vocal sound and Willie Nelson’s unmistakable, flexible phrasing. They don't need to sound alike. In fact, their completely different musical personalities are exactly what makes the combination work.
The result feels relaxed and effortless, but underneath that simplicity is great storytelling, phrasing, timing, and musical chemistry.
