Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar and an Army captain who famously turned down an offer to teach English literature at the United States Military Academy at West Point to pursue songwriting in Nashville. Disowned by his family for the decision, he took a job as a night janitor at Columbia Recording Studios in Nashville, sweeping hallways and emptying trash while legendary sessions took place around him. He spent years pitching unrecorded songs to visiting country icons who barely gave him the time of day before his breakthroughs with Johnny Cash and Janis Joplin changed the landscape of American music forever.
