Purchased unseen by Nelson in 1969 from Nashville luthier Shot Jackson after a drunken patron stepped on his Baldwin electric acoustic at a Texas club, Trigger (a classical Martin N-20) became the sonic signature of outlaw country. Lacking a protective pickguard, Nelson's flat-picking style over five decades gradually excavated a gaping second aperture adjacent to the bridge, requiring annual structural reinforcements by Austin master luthier Mark Erlewine. Covered in hundreds of carved autographs starting with Leon Russell, the instrument was one of the few personal possessions Nelson sent his daughter to rescue from his burning home in 1970 and later hid from federal IRS asset seizures.
Source: Mark Erlewine's maintenance documentation and Dan Rather's CBS profile on the preservation of Trigger verify the instrument's provenance.
