In 1969, Willie Nelson bought a brand-new Martin N-20 nylon-string classical guitar for 750 dollars after a broken Baldwin was deemed unrepairable, retrofitting it with an internal pickup. Because classical guitars are engineered for fingerpicking without pickguards, decades of aggressive flatpicking wore a sweeping second sound hole directly through the Sitka spruce soundboard. Nelson named the guitar Trigger after Roy Rogers' horse and had dozens of friends and collaborators carve their signatures into the body. When federal authorities seized his personal property over back taxes in 1990, Nelson instructed his family to hide Trigger off the mainland until the settlement was completed.
