Recorded in early 1975 at Autumn Sound Studios in Texas for around four thousand dollars, the Red Headed Stranger concept album was built with extreme restraint, leaning on little more than acoustic guitar, piano, and mouth harp. Columbia Records executives were dismayed upon hearing the tapes, with label heads openly questioning why Nelson had submitted a raw demo and producer Billy Sherrill reportedly mocking it as sounding like it cost two bucks. Nelson held contractually guaranteed total creative control and refused to allow Nashville session overdubs or orchestral polishing. The stripped-back single went straight to number one on the country charts and earned him his first Grammy Award.
